"Avebury doth as much exceed in greatness the so renown'd Stoneheng as a Cathedral doeth a parish Church."

(John Aubrey, 1649)

My own personal opinion is that Avebury is probably the most exciting of all the stone circles in England. Not just because of its huge scale, although of course that is impressive, but because the very aura of the place evokes strange, inexplicable feelings of an almost frighteningly spiritual nature. There is still a great power in those remaining ancient stones... especially as anyone who has visited the monument after dusk will, I'm sure, agree...

On the other hand, Stonehenge, for me, has lost whatever power it once had... even at sunrise on the Summer solstice. I think that's probably more to do with the fencing off and commercialisation of the site, with its car park, souvenir shop and subway under the main road, than with the monument itself. But to me it just feels sad, sterile, empty and meaningless.

I'd also recommend a visit to the Rollright Stones. Although compared to Avebury or Stonehenge it's only a small site, it's still very impressive in its own way, and it sits in an attractive, quiet, rural setting on the border of Oxfordshire and Warwickshire. More importantly, it's still got a great "feel" to it...

Anyway, enjoy the sites I've put together on this page... and feel free to drop me an e-mail about your favourite stone circles, or send me your stories of any strange experiences you've had in any of them... and I'll post them here on the site...
